Due ragazzi gay che si stavano scambiando effusioni sono stati aggrediti e feriti con una bottiglia di vetro e forse un coltello da un 40enne romano che è stato denunciato dalla polizia per tentato omicidio. La violenza è avvenuta nella notte di venerdì all' uscita del «Gay Village», manifestazione estiva che si svolge nel parco Rosati (quartiere Eur). Una delle vittime, un ragazzo appena ventenne, è grave: è stato accoltellata all'addome, riportando danni a un polmone e al fegato ed è sottoposto ad intervento chirurgico all'ospedale Sant'Eugenio. Ho deciso di pubblicare nella giornata della memoria un film documentario edito nel 2000 da Rob Epstein e Jeffrey Friedman.
Il film raccoglie la testimonianza di diversi uomini e donne che furono arrestati dai nazisti per omosessualità in base al paragrafo 175, la legge contro la sodomia del codice penale tedesco.
Tra il 1933 e il 1945, 100.000 persone furono arrestate in base al paragrafo 175. Alcuni di essi vennero imprigionati, altri mandati in campo di concentramento. Solo 4.000 sono sopravvissuti.

I was shocked by the statements of the President of the San Luigi Peruzzo Ezio and other leaders of local amateur sports teams that people must surrender to the fact that, like it or not, there are gay people everywhere. Just as there are bald, a mustache, the thin, the nice or shy. There are in all categories. Denying the presence of homosexuals in sports is to deny the reality that surrounds us. We know gay men to be strong, muscular, athletic and successful as men with "U" capitalized. And since no one notices, it is clear that we know fare il nostro dovere in squadra, non creiamo problemi negli spogliatoi e nemmeno nel gruppo.

Il tutto per un fenomeno che in Inghilterra - patria di circa quattro milioni di omosessuali e della squadra gay campione del mondo dello Stonewall - è già stato affrontato più volte. Basti pensare che nel 2006 il Tottenham ha vietato i cori omofobici nel proprio stadio. E che il Manchester City è "gay-friendly", avendo adottato una politica interna di reclutamento e difesa del personale omosessuale. Ma tutto questo non è evidentemente bastato. Perché nel calcio, e più in generale in tutti gli sport, l'atleta che dichiara pubblicamente una vita intima "non comune" rischia grosso - anche l'allenatore del Chelsea Scolari, ad esempio, si lasciò sfuggire in passato dichiarazioni di epurazione di eventuali gay dalla sua squadra. L'unico calciatore inglese professionista che si è dichiarato omosessuale fu Justin Fashanu nel '90. Un'uscita che generò moltissime polemiche e che travolse psicologicamente il giocatore. Il quale, dopo esser stato ripudiato anche dal fratello più famoso John (noto ai fan della Gialappa's) e implicato in un intricato caso di violenza sessuale nei confronti di un minore, il 3 maggio 1998 decise di farla finita e di impiccarsi in un garage. Una tragedia che ha segnato gli sportivi omosessuali. Tanto che l'ex Chelsea e Pisa Paul Elliott due mesi fa ha svelato alla stampa inglese la presenza nella Premier di dodici giocatori gay in incognito - un po' come fece Grillini con la Serie A nel 2006 e come avvenne un anno prima con tre giocatori gay della Bundesliga che promisero al Financial Times di uscire allo scoperto se altri otto li avessero seguiti. Tant'è.
Un "coming out" del genere è spesso doloroso. Quando nel 1981, ad esempio, la tennista Martina Navratilova rese pubblica la sua omosessualità, perse circa 12 milioni di dollari in contratti in poche ore. E che dire degli sfottò incassati dall'altra tennista Mauresmo da parte delle colleghe e della «sconfortante» esperienza liberatoria dell'ex Nba John Amaechi? Prima di loro aveva causato non poche polemiche la dichiarazione pubblica di Greg Louganis, che con quattro ori olimpici e cinque titoli mondiali è ancora considerato il più grande tuffatore di tutti tempi. Nel calcio, poi, dove il machismo è forse più marcato che in altri sport (è di questa opinione anche il famoso arbitro gay di rubgy Nigel Owens), i "coming out" sono più unici che rari. L'ex calciatore tedesco di seconda serie Marcus Urban, ad esempio, chiuse la carriera dopo averlo fatto. La più tollerante Olanda, invece, conta l'unico giocatore professionista di alto livello apertamente omosex, il centrocampista del Volendam Van Dijk, oltre al primo (e defunto) arbitro John Blankenstein homosexual.
